Our Members Stand Together
In 2006, North Carolina enacted laws which prevent most people in our Latino community from obtaining or renewing their driver’s license. The effects of this law have been far reaching and debilitating, denying our neighbors not only the right to drive, but many other necessary services as well. When businesses and agencies require a driver’s license as proof of identity and residency, though there is no law or regulation requiring them to do so, our community is shut out. In some neighboring counties, people may be required to supply proof of identity or risk being taken to jail.
In order to address this problem at a practical level, Centro de Enlace is offering photo ID membership cards to residents of Yancey County. Two important local offices are now accepting this card as a photo ID, and it is already proving useful to community members. The card also serves as a library card for AMY Regional Libraries.
You can support the Latino community and Centro de Enlace by becoming a ‘compañero!’ (pronounced kom-puhn-yair-oh)
Though you may have a driver’s license or a photo ID, you can help promote acceptance of this form of identification by obtaining a Centro de Enlace membership card and using it throughout Yancey County. We are asking that you support the center with a donation of $20 for a membership card and the chance to stand together with our Latino neighbors.
As we require our clients to present an original birth certificate and proof of residence for the membership card, we ask that you do the same. Please bring these documents to Centro de Enlace or call (828)682-6750 for more information.
You can still become a compañero and receive a membership card, even if you are not a resident of Yancey County!
Donate here to receive a compañero card with your name and a photo of Los Viejitos dancing.
Thank you for your support!
